What Creates a Harder Lacrosse Shot? Form, Stick Setup, or Strength?

Every lacrosse player wants to shoot harder, but one question comes up repeatedly:

What matters most—your stick, your mechanics, or your strength?

The answer is clear:

1. Technique (60–70%)
Proper shooting mechanics generate the greatest increase in shot speed. Power begins with your legs, transfers through your hips and core, and finishes with your hands and stick. Elite shooters rely on efficient body mechanics rather than simply stronger arms.

2. Stick Setup (20–30%)
Your pocket, shooting strings, whip, hold, and shaft all influence how efficiently energy transfers to the ball. A properly strung stick won’t replace good mechanics, but it can unlock additional velocity and improve consistency.

3. Strength (10–20%)
Strength matters, but not in the way many players think. Explosive hip rotation, leg drive, rotational core power, grip strength, and shoulder stability all contribute more than simply building bigger arms.

The Kinetic Chain

Every hard shot relies on the kinetic chain:

  • Drive off the back foot
  • Rotate the hips explosively
  • Rotate the torso
  • Pull with the top hand
  • Snap with the bottom hand
  • Finish with a full follow-through

When each movement flows into the next, maximum energy transfers to the ball.

Five Ways to Increase Shot Speed

  • Master your shooting mechanics.
  • Develop explosive rotational power.
  • Optimize your stick setup.
  • Improve grip and forearm strength.
  • Practice shooting at game speed with consistent repetition.

The hardest shooters aren’t always the strongest athletes—they’re usually the most technically efficient.

At Wormburner Lacrosse, we believe smart training produces faster shots and better players.
