Every offensive player eventually finds themselves isolated against a defender. Those moments often determine possessions—and sometimes entire games.
Winning a one-on-one matchup isn’t about making a highlight-reel move. It’s about reading the defender, attacking with purpose, and creating just enough separation to gain an advantage.
1. Read the Defender
Before making your move, watch the defender’s hips and feet.
Defenders often reveal their intentions with their body positioning. If they overplay one side or become flat-footed, attack the space they’ve left behind.
2. Sell Your Dodge
Great dodgers commit completely.
Whether you’re using a split dodge, speed dodge, rollback, or face dodge, your shoulders, eyes, and feet should all tell the same story. Half-speed fakes rarely fool quality defenders.
3. Change Speed
The best offensive players understand that acceleration creates separation.
Slow down just enough to freeze your defender, then explode through the opening. Changing pace is often more effective than simply trying to outrun someone.
4. Protect Your Stick
Once you’ve earned a step, don’t give it back.
Keep your stick tight to your body, use your shoulder to shield the defender, and run through contact while maintaining control.
5. Finish Strong
Creating separation is only half the job.
Attack the cage with confidence, keep your eyes up, and make the right decision—shoot, feed, or draw the slide.
