5 Key Skills for a Good Lacrosse Player

Want to dominate the field? 🥍💥 It’s not just about natural talent; it’s about mastering the fundamentals.

1. STICK HANDLING & CARRYING

The Foundation: You can’t score if you don’t have the ball. Mastery means being confident with your top hand and control.

The “Wormburner” Edge: Don’t just hold the stick; become one with it. Focus on keeping your stick protected near your body and running while looking for the next play. A player who handles pressure and never drops a ball is a massive asset to any offense.

2. PASSING & CATCHING

The Difference Maker: Great lacrosse is about movement, and ball movement is faster than any player. Consistent, accurate “shoveling” (passing/catching) keeps the defense off-balance.

The “Wormburner” Edge: Learn to throw with varying speeds and angles (from overhand to sidearm or “wormburners”) to fit the ball into tight windows. Your team’s dynamic play is only as good as its weakest catcher.

3. SHOOTING & ACCURACY

The Game Changer: Being strong is great, but hitting the corners (high or low “wormburners”!) wins games. It’s about more than just speed—it’s deception, follow-through, and placement.

The “Wormburner” Edge: Make goalies dread you. Develop a shot that is not just fast, but placed exactly where you want it, every single time.

4. DEFENSIVE PLAY & FOOTWORK

The Anchor: Good defense is about technique, communication, and never taking a play off. It doesn’t matter your position; you must be ready to play D when the ball turns over.

The “Wormburner” Edge: Focus on holding your ground, timing your checks, and always playing with strong, athletic footwork. A defender who communicates and positions well can stop even the fastest dodger.

5. AGILITY, SPEED & STAMINA

The Motor: Lacrosse is a high-speed game. You need explosive agility for dodging and defensive cuts, elite speed for ground balls, and the stamina to play full speed in the 4th quarter.

The “Wormburner” Edge: Train specifically for speed and quick turns. Don’t just run distance—train for the sudden, powerful bursts that define lacrosse. A well-conditioned player is a dominant player when everyone else is tired.
